LLX Press Books OnLine Reviews Forum ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ We have had so many different kinds of responses but the one common thread is that the classes and your book have given people a greater insight into the dying process. In fact, it has made some people think about their own death in a whole different way. It has been a very effective and uplifting experience.

I am an Activities Therapist at the Ottumwa Good Samaritan Health
and Rehabilitation Center. Although my work with the residents of
our care facility do not require me to give cares to the dying, I
do anyway. My job is to assure and maintain a decorum of quality
in my residents' lives. As far as I'm concerned, my residents
deserve quality of life until their final breath has been taken.
I do a lot of sensory stim, music therapy, touch therapy, etc when
I have a resident at the end of his/her life. I often "keep vigil"
until family members arrive. In most cases, the family asks that
I remain with them until the end, knowing I have been a source of
comfort for their loved one. I also do some grief and bereavement
counseling afterward.
More personal info:
I forgot to mention that I was very impressed with the subtle, yet
convincing method in which the author conveyed the dyings' rights.
I'm an ex Corrections Officer, who just so happens to uphold the
Constitution and it's Ammendments. Not for just a select group,
but for everyone, and these rights must be cherished and protected.

-- Re: Whispers Format
Brilliantly presented
I chose "brilliantly presented" because I feel it was. I also feel
that it was poignantly written, with profoundidity. This book
brought, to me, an epiphany with it's phenomenological and
existentialist perspective.
-- Re: Exercises
Very helpful
The left side of the book provides a superb outlet for me to
self-reflect and ponder issues I've not brought into conscious
awareness before.
-- Re: Writing the Exercises:
Did most exercises on paper instead
I love to write in books! Most of my college notes were scribbled
in my text books. This one, however, I'm saving because I have
some people I'd like to share it with first. I've shown it to
the Administration at Good Samariitan. I also have a meeting with
Hospice of Wapello county, where I would like to introduce the book
to them. I've spoken with them about this book and they are eager
to check it out!
-- Re: Usefulness:
Incredibly valuable to me!
I've only lost a few family members, but I have lost many residents
to whom I became very close to. Every death is different and my
emotions vary. As far as my reality, this book was right on the
mark! Some of my residents did choose when to go, others needed
permission. One woman, in particular who taught me more about grace
than I ever could have imagined, wanted a hot bowl of chicken noodle
soup (which Dietary said, "No way!)and to hear her favorite hymn,
"I'll Fly Away." I brought her the soup and arranged for a quartet
to come to her room. I fed her the soup and afterward I sand the
hymn while the musicians played. I held her hand while I sang.
When we were finished, she left us peacefully departed. That was
so incredibly cool.
-- Re: Quality
Wonderful book all around
I liked the design, format and overall presentation. I also liked
having the press and web info included.
-- Re: Book Size
Very Handy Size
I like the size because my brief case is full enough and I definitely
want to carry this book with me everywhere.
-- Re: Price / Value
A real bargain for such a useful book!
I actually recieved the book as a gift, so I obviously didn't pay
for it. However, I wouldn't hesitate to pay for it. In fact,
I was surprised that it was so inexpensive.
-- Re: Read this Author before?
Would love to read other works by this author
I would like to read everything that this author has written.
Not just in the realm of social science, but his poetry as well.
I LOVE poetry.
-- Re: Writing Style
Incredibly Rich
It's so difficult to choose only one! My life has been enriched
ffrom reading this book and now, my residents' lives will be, too.
I found it to be very tenderly written and loved the pearls of wisdom
that concluded the right side pages. I love literature and I was
very pleased to read this book for it's literary value. I was
captivated by Sapienza's use of brilliant metaphors. Within the
realm of Thanatology, this book is a unique breath of fresh air.

Powerful words, those!
Very sensitive and answers all questions and concerns. I was
impressed by how much in depth it goes.
-- Re: Exercises
Useful for thinking
Very helpful for focusing one's thoughts in a very stressful time
and for reflection later on.
No, not yet. Will wait for when I'll need it.
-- Re: Usefulness:
Incredibly valuable to me!
Although I'm not in such a situation just now, I anticipate I will
be in the not-too-distant future with my parents who are now in
their 80s. I think the book will help me keep in touch with reality
in such a stressful time.
